Pathfinder Learn

+40% course completion — redesigning the learner journey. Students were enrolling but not finishing. The platform had great content and a UX that was quietly killing engagement. We rebuilt the learner experience from the first login to certificate.

The Problem

Great courses.
Nobody finishing them.

Week-1 Drop-off Rate
44%
Nearly half of all new students abandoned their first course within 7 days. With no habit loop, the platform offered no reason to return after missing a single day.
Course Completion Rate
18%
Only 18% of enrolled students completed their first course. Industry benchmark for self-paced learning is 35–40%. Pathfinder was at less than half.
Modules Visible at Enrollment
All 32
Students logged in and immediately saw 32 modules, multiple quizzes, and 12 hours of content. The overwhelm was instant — many never started lesson one.
Engagement was the real problem
01

No habit loop or progress visibility

The platform showed a static course list with no streak counter, weekly goal, or progress visualization. Missing a day felt the same as never starting — there was no emotional cost to stopping.

02

Module overload at first view

Students saw the entire course structure — all 32 modules, all quizzes, all projects — on day one. Research shows that visible complexity before competence is built causes 61% of learners to disengage within 72 hours.

03

No achievement or reward system

Finishing a module felt the same as not finishing one. No badges, no milestones, no celebration moment. Completing a course was an invisible event — there was nothing worth sharing on LinkedIn.

Our Approach

Design for
habit formation.

01
🔥
Progress Architecture
Designed a habit-driven dashboard with streak counter, weekly goal progress, and a persistent "Next Lesson" CTA always visible above the fold. Students know exactly where they left off and why returning matters.
02
🔓
Progressive Module Unlocking
Hid future content until the current module was complete. Students saw 3–5 upcoming modules max. Reduced visible complexity by 80%. In user testing, "overwhelmed" ratings dropped from 68% to 12%.
03
🏆
Achievement System
Built milestone badges, shareable certificates, and a course completion celebration that prompts a LinkedIn share. 23% of completions now generate a social share — creating organic referral enrollments.

"Students are actually finishing courses now. The platform feels like it was built for learning, not just selling. Completion rates went up by 40% in the first two months."
